PETER WITH HIS DAUGHTERS ON THE QUEENSLAND/NSW BORDER

MELINDA KENDALL

FIELD TRIP TO THE CLARENCE

Peter  ventured South the New England and the Clarence in May 2008. In the process of Seeking Melinda, he searched the Archives in Armidale’s Regional Archives at Newling. Thanks to William for his Assistance and then took a caravan in Grafton from which he was able to access the Grafton Historical Society and once again was given a full day’s attentiion and assistance. Many thanks.

He had hoped to locate the grave of Basil Kendall, Melinda’s husband. This proved elusive but many other gems were found and a brief conversation in Schaeffer House , home of the Clarence Historical Society led him to RUSHFORTH ROAD  and Bushy Park. Later reading of HAMILTON-GREY – indicates that Basil did indeed die out here on this road just out of South Grafton.

Peter is now compiling the bits and pieces he has brought home with him and the Clarence is  less unknown to him than it was a week ago and yet even more mysterious.

EARLY ILLAWARRA POETRY – A SELECTION

PETER KNOX – WHEN NEWS WAS POETRY

PETER KNOX IS SHOWN HERE WITH HEADSTONES AT WOLLONGONG ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE.

These headstones came from Wollongong’s former graveyard by the sea. The Graveyard features in two of the poems in the anthology edited by Peter – EARLY ILLAWARRA POETRY – A SELECTION. ($16.45 – available at the Uni Shop Wollongong University or phone FIVE ISLANDS PRESS on 02 4271 5292)

Peter has included 6 poems on the BULLI DISASTER of 23rd March 1887.

‘Twas on the 23 of March the wires flashed the fatal news around

That eighty gallant miners

were lost beneath the ground.”

(M.J. Shannon Illawarra Mercury . April 9 ,1887)

Peter, in the process of his research, located 200-plus Illawarra-centric poems in newspapers and magazines. These were published between 1850s and 1920s.

Peter says ,

” Until the 1930s poetry was a very important part of journalism”
