PRE CHRISTMAS PROGRESS REPORT

Things are warming up for Peter with the sub-tropical heat and both PETER KNOX PhD Researcher and alter-ego IZZY FOREAL are working many hours a day including a 2.30 a.m. gig wrap up at Lennox Head. The heat of the North Country seems to suit this high powered researcher.
Latest snippet re thesis is that Peter is working on the chapter comparing Melinda to other re-remembered women writers and on her life story. He now has until the end of 2009 to complete his work as he had re-enrolled part time to complete the remainder which makes him no less eligible for Newstart and Austudy than before which means he will continue getting NOTHING from the Government. Melinda thanks you, Mr Rudd, for Zilch and driving this mild-mannered researcher back into the smokey dens of the backbars of hotels to make a living in Rock N Roll at 59 years of age. Australia – the Educating Country.

OCTOBER UPDATE

“ Um. Says Peter. Basically, I am writing 2 major chapters of the thesis which may be re-designed into 4 long chapters instead of the original six. During renegotiations for reenrolment I shall go back to part time research to allow extra time to research and earn extra money to eat and stuff. “

“October I hosted a workshop at the Clarence Valley Conservatorium and will be returning on November 9 to work with the senior drama students.”

“Dr Clay Djubal and I  collaborated during the month in website design and production for Dr Djubal (uq AND austlit ) . Please see entry below.”

To Sum the month up Peter makes this statement as a tantalising tidbit;

“HENRY, THE BASTARD, WAS QUITE HAPPY TO ALLOW HIS MOTHER TO BECOME BANKRUPT, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD ! ( AND I WILL BE CRYING OUT LOUD ON HER BEHALF.) “

“I have applied for a job at QUT as a literary studies lecturer.”

In addition, our bags are packed and we are on our way for a re-imaging Wild Travel South and West to stimulate the Thinking. Regional Centres here we come ! Tents packed. Sleeping bag ready to roll.

“ This month I completed a circle of 40 years by re-discovering my son, Jamie, born in 1968 and having only met once before when he was a matter of weeks old. So far ! SO Good !”

CLARENCE VALLEY AND ARMIDALE

PETER returned briefly to Grafton for a workshop at the Clarence Valley Conservatorium in Villiers Street. He took an Armidale deviation before returning to the Cottage and his books. Presently he is immersed in studies of Melinda’s contemporaries – the poetesses of the 19th Century in Australia.

PROGRESS ON MELINDA AND CO

As a backup skill for Life researching, Peter has taken to Bagel Making

 and thus keeps the household well fed

He has dug into the plastic containers and vertical files from his previous 18 months in Wollongong ( interrupted by the two years at AUSTLIT based in University of Queensland in Rapunzel’s Tower) . This has unearthed Acres of Discoveries.

Peter is at the moment deep in comparisons between poems bearing a strong family resemblance.

His research Assistant through the facility of the newly released NATIONAL LIBRARY OF AUSTRALIA BETA DIGITISATION OF HISTORIC NEWSPAPERS has snagged 1 or 2 hitherto buried secrets and leaves the conclusions to Peter to be drawn. The RA is drawing her own romantic and criminal conclusions.

WINTERING IN BILAMBIL.

Peter is busy applying for positions in Academia. Failing that, mowing lawns would be OK.

Peter eagerly awaits the first feedback on his thesis chapter from his supervisor in  Wollongong.

He is excited about his discoveries related to the life of Melinda Kendall and her family. The sighting of copies of Patrick McNally’s court martial records from Canada has been a highlight of Peter’s recent research.

Peter Knox doesn’t do much these days. Izzy Foreal seems to have taken over playing music while Peter Knox completes his PhD.
